TRIOs Development Support, New Delhi with support from Ford Foundation India, conducted a study in seven states to assess the current state of Adolescent Reproductive and Health Services (ARSH) and suggest changes if any, that may be required in the guidelines and framework for the ARSH interventions.
The study covered Bihar, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu (states where youth survey was done) and in addition Gujarat and Orissa.
An Advisory group was formed to guide the project, it includes – Shri A R Nanda, IAS, former Secretary, Family Welfare, Government of India; Ms Rita Teaotia IAS, Additional Secretary, Information Technology, Government of India, New Delhi; Ms Arti Ahuja, IAS, Secretary, DWCD, Government of Orissa; Dr Kirti Iyengar, Coordinator, Reproductive Health Program, ARTH, Udaipur Rajasthan; Prof Gita Sen, Professor, Centre for Public Policy, IIM Bangalore;Ms Gitanjali Misra, Executive Director, CREA, New Delhi; Ms Renu Khanna, Secretary, SAHAJ, Baroda, Gujarat; Dr Rajani Ved, Advisor, Community Processes, NHSRC, New Delhi.
Data collection – Field visits were undertaken in two districts in each state, based on the suggestion of the respective Health Departments. 40 health facilities – Medical Colleges, District hospitals, Sub district hospitals, CHCs, PHCs and Sub Centers were visited to assess service provision and to discuss/ interview the various levels of service providers. 35 Medical Officers, 21 Staff Nurses 53 ANMs and 56 ASHAs were interviewed. The key health officials at the state and the district level were also interviewed to get their perspectives. In addition, about 20 FGDs were done with adolescent girls and boys.
